Born May 13, 1935 in San Francisco, Burny was destined to work in the animation industry because of the impact that Pinocchio made on him as a six-year old boy. With no formal art training he worked his way up the ranks at Disney to become an animator on productions such as Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, The Sword in the Stone, The Jungle Book, and The Aristocats (see filmography for more). He was the director of the Academy nominated Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983). He continues to work for Disney studios stating that he is having too much fun to retire. His latest achievement is an animation with Goofy called How to Hook Up Your Home Theater (2007).

Early Life/Family

Burny’s younger sister was born in 1941. His father was a drummer for the traveling band Horace Heidt’s Big Band. His mother was from San Jose and like his father was of British heritage. Burny married Sylvia Fry. They have three children, two sons and a daughter. Burny and Sylvia have four grandchildren.

Education/Training

Burny began his career as an inbetweener with no formal art training in 1953. However, he did receive training at Disney in 1972 before becoming an animator on Robin Hood.

Career Outline

Burny started working for Disney in 1953 as a mailroom clerk. Within months he became an inbetweener. After receiving training at Disney he began working as an animator on Robin Hood. Burny was a key animator on Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too. He went on to work on storyboard and title designs for The Rescuers and The Fox and the Hound. He directed Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983). Burny wrote, produced and directed The Great Mouse Detective (1984). He also wrote the 2007 short starring Goofy How to Hook Up Your Home Theater.

Burny was changed by viewing Pinocchio at the age of six, he was drawing Disney character’s by the age of twelve, he started working for Disney in 1953, he still works there today, so one could say that his style is Disney.

Burny is so involved with work that he has no time for hobbies. He does not want to retire because he is having too much fun.

When asked by interviewer, Jérémie Noyer, “What fictional villains frightened you as a child?”, he answered “Frankenstein! I remember sitting in the theater and thinking he was coming down the aisle behind me. The other one was The Thing!”
