Bio Summary

Hans Georg Conried Jr., was raised in Baltimore, and New York City. He studied acting at Columbia University, and played many major classical roles onstage. After having been a member of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre Company, he was heard as Professor Kropotkin on the radio show "My Friend Irma," and had various roles on the "Edgar Bergen - Charlie McCarthy Show". He was in the original cast of Cole Porter's 1953 Broadway hit, "Can-Can", and stayed with the show for more than a year. Known for his sharp wit, Conried was in demand as an actor, narrator, and character actor for television series and movies throughout the 50s and 70s. Over the years, Conried has done many extraordinary voices like Horton/Dr. H Hoovey/Narrator 1953’s “Horton hears a Who,” voiced King Azaz/The Mathemagician in “The Phantom Tollbooth “(1970), Voiced the Grinch and Narrated, “Halloween is Grinch Night” (1977), as well as, voiced Thorin in “The Hobit” (1977). But his best-known and most recognizable work to date is his work as the voice of Mr. Darling and Captain Hook for the famous 1953 Walt Disney Production, “Peter Pan.” And for voicing the two characters from the same movie, he became the first person to play both roles on film.

Early Life/Family

He was married to Margaret Grant from January 29, 1942 until his passing three weeks short of their 40th wedding anniversary. The couple had four children. And his remains were donated to medical science.

Education/Training

At Columbia University Conreid studied acting and sharpened his skills for his later years where he would become one of the most sought out actors in the 50’ s-the-70

Career Outline

In his younger years he began his career at Columbia University, doing plays. Then years later is work took a different turn and he found himself doing voice work on radio shows in the 40’s. And then in the 50 through out the 70’s he became one the most sought after voice actors for television series and movies; and in 1953 he got one of his most memorable voice characters to date, the famous Captain Hook, as well as, Mr. Darling from the Walt Disney production of “Peter Pan;” and setting a record for being the first man to play 2 voice characters on film. Then suddenly Hans Conried passed away from cardiovascular disease on January 5,1982
