Comments On Style

Hilberman was like many of Disney's great animators who's talents go unrecognized because they stepped on Walt's toes.

Influences

Personality

A born leader who fought for his colleagues' rights even though he was sacrificed for it.

Anecdotes

In the Summer of 1940 Hiberman held a meeting with the other animators of Disney at his house. He told them that if they were to all sign cards and send them to the Federal Government that the Government would recognize their union and Walt would have to comply. Soon cards were being sent in by the dozens to start their union.

In October of 1947 Walt Disney testified to HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) that Hilberman was a potential Communist

"HUAC: Can you name any other individuals that were active at the time of the strike that you believe in your opinion are Communists?

WALT DISNEY: Well, I feel that there is one artist in my plant, that came in there, he came in about 1938, and he sort of stayed in the background, he wasn't too active, but he was the real brains of this, and I believe he is a Communist. His name is David Hilberman.

HUAC: How is it spelled?

WALT DISNEY: H-I-L-B-E-R-M-A-N, I believe. I looked into his record and I found that: number 1, that he had no religion, and number 2, that he had spent considerable time at the Moscow Art Theatre, studying art direction or something.
